Today we’re sharing a bungalow renovation project located in Richmond Hill, Toronto, featuring a complete transformation of an older home. Client Needs The existing home lacked sufficient storage, functional layout, and overall aesthetic appeal. The space planning, usability, and design style no longer met the homeowner’s lifestyle needs. 1. Removal of Load-Bearing Kitchen Wall (Image 2) The original load-bearing wall between the kitchen and living room was removed to create a fully open-concept layout. This change visually doubled the sense of space and significantly improved natural light flow. 2. Building Permit Application (Image 3) Structural layout changes of this scale require official building permits. In Canada, strict regulations are in place to ensure residential safety. The permit process ensures all renovations comply with Ontario Building Code standards and prevents potential structural risks. 3. Kitchen Layout Optimization (Image 4) Originally, the laundry area was located inside a bedroom, taking up valuable living space (Image 5). We relocated the laundry into the kitchen area, freeing up more room for both the bedroom and bathroom. This adjustment greatly improved overall functionality. The original U-shaped kitchen was redesigned into an extended L-shaped open kitchen, resolving storage limitations and inefficient circulation. Built-in cabinetry now conceals the laundry, microwave, oven, and refrigerator, resulting in a cleaner, more spacious, and streamlined look. 5. Entryway Wall Modification (Image 5) The solid partition wall at the entrance was replaced with a half-height glass wall, allowing natural light to reach the living room while maintaining spatial separation. This enhances brightness without sacrificing functionality. 6. Staircase Converted into Storage (Image 5) Due to a structural staircase in this area, we transformed the staircase enclosure into a custom storage unit. The space now functions as a cozy leisure corner—perfect for reading, coffee breaks, or relaxed afternoons ☕. 7. Children’s Room & Bedroom Renovation (Images 6 & 7) Custom wardrobes replaced the original closets, while the former partition wall was converted into a built-in walk-in wardrobe system. Storage layouts were customized to the homeowner’s needs. Grey wall tones paired with white cabinetry add texture and warmth without monotony. For the children’s room, additional book storage was incorporated to support both learning and organization as the child grows. 9. Bathroom Renovation (Image 8) The original bathtub was removed and replaced with a walk-in shower. The layout was reconfigured to accommodate a double vanity, improving functionality and everyday convenience.
